SOUND OFF: What Employee Retention Strategies are Working for You?

During the dot-com boom of the late 90s, I spent months covering “the technology workforce crisis” in my column on CIO.com. The big issue was the H-1B visa cap and the insatiable need that companies had for technologists. Along came the dot-com bust, and the news was all about layoffs from the Internet debacle.

Here we are again. The recession notwithstanding, cloud and mobility and consumerization have created an even greater demand for technology talent than in the 90s, and that talent is in even shorter supply. The talent pipeline is being squeezed at both ends. Computer Science program enrollments are down, and an entire generation of experienced technologists is ready to retire. What’s more, Silicon Valley is hopping again, and is luring good people into its clutches.

CIOs across the industry spectrum have to get creative at recruiting, developing and retaining the right talent.

My question to readers this week: What is the most effective approach you are taking to retain your best people? Please let us know using the Comments section below.

@Martha, I feel and see Rotation and Recruitment are core strategies to improve Retention. However this rotation is not just within IT but also within business Roles.

At Intel IT, People as been one of our four core strategic imperatives since I joined in 2009. We actively recruit business leaders into Intel IT and encourge career rotations from IT to the business.

Here is an interesting story about one of our Intel IT security experts and what he learned.

Bottom line is that people want to feel part of something important, know that they make an impact and enabled to innovate and grow personally - This is the culture we have created inside Intel IT.
